This is a recording of the first performance of Monteverdi's Vespro in Kumamoto, Kyushu, performed by the early music ensemble "Ashi", which has been active in Kumamoto for more than 40 years. We
are pleased to have welcomed Shizuko Noiri, a lutenist active in Europe, as Artistic Coordinator and Juan Manuel Quintana, an internationally known viola da gamba player, as Musical Director.
Members of the Vespro Memorial Ensemble who love this music gathered from all over Kyushu, as well as from other regions and overseas, rehearsed for 2 years in preparation for the concert.
Kyushu has been a special region in Japan in connection with Western culture and Christianity since their arrival with Francesco Xavier in the 16th century. We are delighted to have presented one
of the great musical treasures as a part of our culture in Kumamoto.
The performance, which took place in the summer of 2019, was an expression of our prayers and wishes for reconstruction after the 2016 earthquake disaster in Kumamoto. Today we all share the
suffering caused by the global pandemic. In such circumstances, we hope this music will bring the harmony of a diversity full of life, and be a prayer for eternal peace, as Monteverdi would have
